Danish Fabric shops

Se dette indlæg på dansk her.

In Danish, the word for fabric is the same as the word for drugs. So I often make a joke about that, seeing as I have a probably unhealthy amount of fabrics that I’m not sure I’ll be able to use in my lifetime. In my defence, some of it was inherited from my mom. But a lot of it, I’ll admit, I bought myself. Which means I have seen the inside of a fabric shop or two in my time.

In this post, I’ll share the ones I frequent most – in Denmark. I’m based in Mittle Jutland (mainland), so most of the mentioned shops will be local to me. It’s by no means a full list, but the ones I personally have visited recently and can put a word or two on what kind of store it is. Feel free to comment below with shops you like/dislike (preferably in Denmark, but anywhere is fine). Let’s share our experiences!

Kølkær Stof & Hobby - 7400 Herning

Address: Hammerum Hovedgade 130C, 7400 Herning

Webpage: Stofkarsten.dk

This first shop on my list is one of my absolute favourites. It’s not the one that’s closest to me, but it’s usually worth the drive. It’s not a change, but a very large shop with a lot of different types of fabric from pleather and furnite fabric to jersey and lycra in all kinds of colours and an excess of printed jersey. There’s also a lot of trims and other sewing accessories. The shop is kind of devided in two, with one half being mainly sewing things and the other yarn and patchwork fabric. One bad thing is that nothing is labelled, so if you want to know what kind of fabric you’re looking at, you have to ask.  Personally, I don’t care that much about it, I mostly just go by look and feel.

The prices are usually fair, but it’s not the cheapest shop. But they do have -20 to -25% a few times a year for a week or two.

The webpage is not the best, it doesn’t have any filters and nowhere near all the things they have on their shop – but at least they have one.

Below are some photos from the shops Facebook page. It gives an impression of how it looks.

Jydsk stoflager

Address: Jupitervej 2, 7430 Ikast, Danmark

Website: Jydsk-stoflager.dk, also: Jeanettemai.dk

You might as well swing by this shop if you visit Kølkær anyway, since there is only a 5-minute drive between the two and they also have a lot of exciting things.

Jydsk Stoflager seems to focus mainly on digitally printed jersey fabric, which takes up about half of the store. Not necessarily a bad thing – I personally like making clothes from this kind of fabric. But it might not be right for cosplay.

However, they also have a fine selection of what is often called “Dance fabric”, i.e. lycra with and without print, glitter etc. There is of course also more normal fabric and a reasonable selection of trims and accessories

Their main website only sells wholesale – but you can see a little about the selection of fabric in the shop. The other website I have linked to is also theirs, where they sell to private individuals as well.

The first times I visited this shop they were on the opposite side of the road in premises less than half the size. It was quite a mess but now it’s a big modern shop and everything is sorted and placed neatly on the shelves with plenty of room to walk around and look. I kind of miss the old store – I like the feeling of being on a treasure hunt in fabric stores, but I have to admit that it’s nice not to have to look for a specific type of fabric like that.

They are quite active on their Facebook page, where they often post new material. Below are some pictures from there. They are a few years old, but the store still looks a lot like that today.

Kludemanden Harlev

Adress: Harlev Kirkevej 1, 8462 Harlev J

Webpage: None, but active on Facebook

This is one of those”treasure hunt fabric shops”. The shop is located on an old farm and owned by a married couple who like to sew things for their grandchild (judging from their Facebook page). It’s one of those old-fashioned fabric stores where you never quite know what you’ll stumble across, since it doesn’t necessarily follow the latest fashion. I like it because it is different, but also because there are several large tables filled with fabric scraps (often several meters long) which are cheap and are paid per kg.

There is more fabric than there is actually room for, so it can seem a bit messy. However, the owners seem like they have things under control and they are good at helping you find what you need and helping you choose the right one for your project. However, I would advise to bring a flashlight with you (or use the flash on your phone), as the light in the store is quite poor and it can be difficult to see some of the lower shelves.

It is again one of those types of shops where nothing but price is written on the rolls, but again – the shop staff know what they are selling and can help with e.g. washing instructions if you ask them.

They don’t have a website, but they are quite active on their Facebook page, and also answer questions there. I think they are even willing to send material if they post something you want.

Princip Stof

Address: Edwin Rahrs Vej 32M, st. 13, 8220 Brabrand

Webpage: None (and also pretty inactive on Facebook/SoMe)

This store is probably mostly discovered through word-of-mouth or if you come across it by chance, because it has neither a website nor active social media. And on top of that, the names are quite confusing – on the building it says Princip Stof, Bazar stof and Beside. I think Princip is the mother’s shop and Beside is the son’s, which they have combined into one shop. Which is at Bazar Cest. The fabric part of the shop used to be in Tilst (which is how I found it – very visible from the main road), but they moved to Brabrand a few years ago.

Although they are not very visible online, it is definitely worth visiting the store if you are looking for slightly more unusual fabrics. The woman who owns it is also a tailor, so there are usually a lot of nice dresses as well, and you can also get one of the fabric sewn in the shop (from what I heard while I was there).

They also have an insane amount of beautiful trims etc. I found the most perfect fabric and trim for the Prince Stefan cosplay I made last year there. If you are into glitter and gold, this is definitely the right place, but there is also a lot of fine brocade fabric. I also bought my Holiday Rapunzel doll cosplay fabric from here. Some of the fabrics are very expensive and others are super cheap, so it’s a bit mixed.

I took the pictures here myself recently.

StofShop

Address: Silkeborgvej 257, 8230 Åbyhøj (Århus)

Webpage: shop.stofshop.dk

This store is a bit more modern than the other stand alone stores, which means that many of the fabrics they carry are what’s in fashion. But in addition, they also have a good selection of dance fabrics, medieval fabrics (100% wool and slightly pricey), pure silk and fine fabrics for wedding dresses and other occasion wear. The fabrics on the ground floor are a bit expensive compared to some of the other shops on this list, but still within reason. The staff in the store are competent and happy to help (when they have time, but unfortunately they are often very busy).

They also have a basement with very cheap fabrics and here you can often find the special colored pleathers and other fabrics that are not quite in fashion, but which might be just what you need for your cosplay.

They also have a reasonable selection of trims etc.

Their website has a webshop, but only has a limited selection of their in-store fabrics.

They are quite active on Facebook, and the pictures here are from there:

Selfmade

Address: Tilst Søndervej 94, 8381 Tilst

Webpage: selfmade.com

I won’t write a lot about this one, as most people probably know it. It is a chain store that has existed for many years. A few years ago they changed their name from Stof og Stil to Selfmade. I personally am not a fan of the switch. I think it’s ugly.

But it’s a good store, even if it’s a bit focused on fashion.

Fjølner

This shop is now closed 🙁

Address: Sct. Mathiasgade 43, 8800  Viborg

Webpage: fjoelner.dk

I don’t come here very often, mostly due to geography, but I would like to mention it anyway, as it is a good shop with a nice selection. They also have a pretty good website, but I’m not sure their entire stock is on it. However, it is quite a bit better than most of the others on this list, and I like that I can check for potential fabrics before I drive there (it’s a bit far from me).

When I think of the store, I remember a warm and cozy store with a large selection. There are two floors which are well packed but not in an overstuffed way. The people who work in the shop are also nice and some of them even know what cosplay is and that is an advantage when you ask for help. When I looked for pictures of the shop (since I don’t have any myself) I found that they are not active on social media, but that the shop is more than 50 years old and the owner is over 75 and with no plans for retirement. I think that’s pretty cool! I only found this one photo from inside the store, which is from this news article (in Danish) about the store and the owner.

Finally, I just want to link this blog post, which I wrote a while back. It’s not a shop in Denmark, but if there were still direct planes from here to Vilnius, I would probably take a weekend trip there just to visit this shop again!
