New tool: Bernina L450

January 27, 2022

Almost a decade ago, I bought my old overlocker used. It’s been great and I really loved it, but last few years, it started being a bit temperamental. Despite new knives, service etc, it still just wasn’t running right anymore. It’s not broken as such, it still does work kind of, but the seams are no longer as nice as they used to be and it was just really frustrating to need to troubleshoot every time I wanted to use it, when it wasn’t always like that.

This month, I finally had enough and invested in a new machine – the Bernina L450. I’ve only used it for a few hours so far, but it’s so nice, like going from an old, noisy diesel car that needs a few key wiggles to start to a brand new Mercedes or something (what do I know, I only ever had used cars).

It’s not noiseless, but definitely more quiet than my old overlocker. I didn’t bother looking at the manual yet, but it took me just a minute from opening the box to using it, it’s very intuitive. It doesn’t have a ton of settings, just the usual tensions etc, and that’s fine with me – I tried fancy overlocker that has loads of settings and seams and stuff, and I spent more time cursing over how hard it was to thread and setup than I did sewing.

Maybe I’ll do a more in-depth review of it later when I’ve had a change to play some more with it.
